Recently, the Halaal Department (HD) participated in the Annual General Meeting of the World Halaal Council (WHC) held at Umhlanga in Durban, South Africa. This event also commemorated the 25th anniversary of the organization, representing a notable achievement. During the conference themed Halaal beyond boundaries, experts emphasized the significance of Halaal in the global economy, highlighting a demand that exceeds 1 billion and continues to expand. They noted that Halaal extends beyond the Muslim community, encompassing sectors such as tourism and pharmaceuticals. Halaal represents a standard of quality assurance, which was a central theme in the panel discussions at the World Halaal Conference.
In a noteworthy development, Sheikh Thafier Najjaar of IQSA in South Africa has been elected as the new president, succeeding Zafer Gedikli, who now serves as the vice president representing GIMDES of Turkey. Brother Abdul Rahaman T. Linzag from the Philippines, under IDCP, and Mln. Navlakhi of the South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) have retained their positions as General Secretaries. The HD extends its congratulations to the newly elected executive committee of the WHC and wishes them success and longevity in their vital global Halaal initiatives. Furthermore, the Halaal Department of the Muslim Association of Malawi has been elected to serve on both the Shariah and technical committees.
The week-long meeting, which took place from October 18 to 25, 2024, included various activities, such as a review of the World Halaal Council Charter and a workshop designed to enhance the understanding of WHC member organizations regarding Halaal certification, with a particular emphasis on the integrity of product certifications across companies. This annual event attracted participants from both member and non-member countries from Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Austria. The World Halal Council (WHC) was established in 1999 in Jakarta and serves as a world body that unites Halaal certifying organizations from around the globe.
