The Halaal Department (HD) recently conducted a work shop with Market slaughterers from Blantyre and sounding districts. The workshop took place at Islamic Information Bureau in Limbe. The event was one of the activities that HD conducts every year. The aims of the workshop were high, as HD examined many challenges the Halaal operations face in the markets and how to combat them more importantly to discuss the conditions necessary to overcome them.

During the workshop HD advised the Slaughterers to observe all the requirements of sharia in as far as Islamic slaughtering is concerned. They were reminded to always remember the proclamation words of slaughtering when doing the job and that the slaughtering must be done with a sharp knife. HD said that slaughtering process must be done in a fast way so that the pain of slaughter to the animal is minimized. HD reminded that the slaughtering should be done by cutting the throat, wind pipe and the blood vessels in the neck to cause the animal death leaving the spinal cord intact to allow blood exsanguination.

HD encouraged Muslim Market slaughterers to put extra gear on their noble work as they are the main source of Halaal food particularly, to Halaal Certified outlets and to the Malawi Muslim community as a whole. They were also encouraged to remain in the state of clean minds and continue to avoid intoxicants so that the Muslim community must still be trusting them. It was stated that the one who is in state of sober will be able to remember and proclaim Tasmiya (Bismillahi Allahu Akbar) when slaughtering making the meat Halaal.

In return, the participants thanked HD for organizing such beneficial workshop because they got awakened and ability of sharing their skills amongst themselves and that their commitment to the Halaal work, was rejuvenated. The workshop was attended by 47 representatives from 22 markets.
